Cleaning products

Because the tiles are natural clay, they are slightly absorbent, and have often absorbed a great deal of dirt over the years. They may now need intensive cleaning and sealing to enhance the colours and make them easier to maintain. We can supply intensive cleaner, which is a strong alkali (please follow instructions carefully) to clean back to the bare tile. In certain extreme cases (particularly with floors consisting of black and white tiles only) an acid cleaner can be helpful. We do not supply this by mail but patio cleaner found in hardware shops should be suitable. Again please follow the instructions carefully. If you have paint residue on the floor or it has been varnished, clean this off with a liquid paint stripper, before you carry out any other cleaning work.

The tiles were originally oiled by hand after washing to bring up a sheen and seal the surface of the tiles. This is hard work as it must be repeated every time the floor is washed and we recommend and supply Golvpolish, a long lasting acrylic sealer. Original floors will normally require 4 or 5 thin coats initially but will only then need a top up every 6 months or so, depending on traffic, if the floor is cleaned regularly with the recommended maintenance cleaner Superfloor.
