Geometric & Encaustic Tiled Floors Conservation & Restoration Projects

We have been examining and reporting on Victorian and Edwardian floors and pavements for over 15 years.  In that time we have examined thousands of floors and managed hundreds of restoration projects, from small chapels up to the Victoria & Albert Museum.

We are happy to offer a Consultancy Service for restoration projects involving Geometric and Encaustic tiled floors in Public, Ecclesiastical and Commercial buildings.

We can  also provide design consultancy for new tiled floors in appropriate and sympathetic styles for such period buildings.

Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

Below are some project that Original Features have been recently working on.

Restoration work at the Victorian & Albert Museum

The floors in the Victorian and Albert Museum were originally laid in the period 1864- 1876, From the 1950s onwards many of the floors were covered with a vinyl covering laid on a latex leveling screed. Removing the covering revealed that many of the tiles had suffered damage and needed to be replaced. Original features undertook the restoration of the floors matching and replacing the damaged tiles.

The Hospital Chapel of St Mary & St Thomas of Canterbury

The Hospital and Chapel of St Mary and St Thomas of Canterbury was founded in the 12th century. The building was greatly altered in the 19th century, which included the laying down of ceramic floor tiles. In 2005, as part of the ongoing renovation of the building, Original Features undertook the project of restoring the Victorian tiling and laying new tiles to compliment the original flooring.
